You might have noticed that we’ve been offline for the past few days… That’s because I was busy transfering my domain to a new host. What I thought to be a simple procedure turned out to be a little more complicated than I realised so I didn’t even get a chance to write a notice that we might be offline for a while. I guess I know now why companies outsource IT…
We’re pretty much back online now, thanks to an IT buddy, although there are still a few minor issues with website layouts to iron out so please excuse us while the clean-up crew is in progress.
I guess I learned a few important things from this experience:
1. When it comes to the really technical matters for your website, look for someone qualified to handle the job unless you were born with a laptop on your lap.
2. If you insist on going solo, then make sure you download all your website files before terminating your account with the other hosting company.
3. Make sure you export your MySQL database because you’ll need it to get your website back up and running on your new host. Apparently you can do it using a program called phpMyAdmin.
4. There’s a file called configuration that you’ll need to update all the file paths on.
The whole transfering process takes a bit of time so you might want to warn your readers that the site might be down for a few days before you attempt the transfer. Other than that, good luck!
