Although you can choose to operate any business you desire from the comfort of you home, but there are certain things that hold true for all businesses that will help to ensure its success. When one thinks of a home business, the idea of being your own boss, working when you want, sleeping in and not having to travel to peak hour traffic can be mightily appealing. However, it is easy to forget that it is still a business. There is a common misconception that running a home business allows you to dictate every part of its operation. While there are many aspects of a home business in which are completely under your control, your customers and clients will also have input on many functions.
1. The first and most important thing you need to run a successful home business is to set a schedule. It can be very tempting to stay up late to watch the late night movie and then repeatedly hit the snooze button on your alarm clock the next morning, but when you are dealing with clients over the phone you really do not want them to think their early morning phone call has just rousted you from sleep. Although having a lot of free time and being able to take naps in the middle of the day can be very appealing, it is important to keep regular hours with any business.
2. Make sure your office is separated from the rest of the house and that it is only used as an office. In addition to the tax benefits of carving out a space that is used strictly for work, you will also have the feeling when you walk into your office in the morning that it is time to get to work. Similarly, when the day is over and you leave your home office, you need to feel as though you have gone home for the day. Just as you want to keep family distractions out of the office, you also need to keep work distractions out of the rest of the house.
3. Being professional in all business dealings when in your home office will help preserve your image as a business owner. Even if you cannot afford a separate telephone line for the business, you can answer the phone in a professional manner during your regular business hours.
4. Unless your business is in the field of dreams, simply building it will not guarantee that customers will show up. Advertising and marketing is essential to any business, even those that operate exclusively online. Since it is unlikely that you would have a sign in front of your home indicating that you are open for business and inviting passers-by to stop by and see what you have to offer, the only way anyone will know about your business is through advertising.
5. A website is very useful even if you will not be conducting any business online. It can serve as your web-based sales pamphlet and include information about you, your experience and your business. Including prominent contact information on the first page of your website is a key to obtaining more business, but you should also have a contact form available for people to send in a request for information or posting questions.
